Hi, folks! Welcome to carpenter. My name is Nicole Carpenter, and this is my newsletter, where I’ll write about pens — fountain pens, gel pens, ballpoint pens, rollerball pens, dip pens, and felt tip pens. I’ll also write about other stationery items too, like notebooks and inks and stickers.

I’ve always been particular about pens, but first used a fountain pen a few years ago. When I worked as a freelance reporter, I went to the dog park during the day — the same time every day — and made friends with all the old men who also went during that time. One of them was writing in a little notepad with a brass fountain pen, and I asked about it.

He, a brave soul, asked if I wanted to try it out. I did, and a few days later I went to my local pen store to purchase one for myself. Now, I have way too many fountain pens (and other sorts of pens), but I try to make time to use a few of them each day, whether that’s writing notes for work or journaling.

I decided to start this newsletter after beginning a silly new project — documenting all the fountain pens shown during Netflix’s The Crown. If you don’t know, it’s a very fountain pen–heavy show. I’m also currently watercolor painting my art supply collection, and I’d love a place to share all these things with folks who appreciate a good pen — of any kind.

Do you have any questions or comments about pens or stationery you want to share? I’d love to feature other analog tool lovers, and also answer some questions. You can send questions on Twitter @sweetpotatoes, or send me an email at carpenternewsletter@gmail.com.

In the meantime, tell your friends!
